Administration backs off Bush's vow to reduce Mideast oil imports

WASHINGTON - One day after President Bush vowed to reduce America's dependence on Middle East oil by cutting imports from there 75 percent by 2025, his energy secretary and national economic adviser said Wednesday that the president didn't mean it literally.
I used to write ads back in the day. One of the reasons I don't do it so much anymore is pretty simple: Clients insisted you make the logo as big as their foot. And they wouldn't let me make shit up. Man, what a drag. Good to see things have changed.

I saw that ad over at another site and almost wretched, but not for the same reason the Kos crowd did. That whole "addicted to oil" thing made me sick, with promises of the same old subsidies for "anol" R&D, etc. If those bio-based alternatives were so wonderful, why is "anol" gas so much cheaper than straight gas at all the pumps in Iowa? Hmm?

On the other hand, it's almost impossible to imagine a scenario where we don't drastically reduce our dependence on ME oil by 2025. Natural technological progression will reduce the extraction price of North American shale/sand oils to price levels that won't be threatenable by OPEC well before the end of the period. Natural technology progression will dramatically increase the fuel efficiency of private transportation. Natural technology progression will improve the efficiency of insulation materials, and will introduce innovative new sources of re-use and generation of power.

I guess I'm going to have to go write a full-blown screed at my own place.

oooh, there's too much in there for a comment. But anol is just one big fancy way for farm states and their pols to spread cheer. EROEI on anol and biodiesel, burrito-powered scooters and a whole host of other "emerging altenatives" is net negative. Hell, it takes 6 barrels of oil to make one Lb of hamburger meat, from insemination to store shelf. Sand extraction comes in at 1.5. We're peakin', dude. The age of wal*mart's warehouse on wheels is gonna be CAGR nitemare here pretty soon, especially with the fine management skills of the fellas running washington these days. That better be some tasty tech with absolutely no downside for any existing and entrenced industry otherwise we're gonna have to get you a pony.

Hey, go here. Pick one.
