Gallup: More Than Half of Americans Reject Evolution, Back Bible

NEW YORK A Gallup report released today reveals that more than half of all Americans, rejecting evolution theory and scientific evidence, agree with the statement, "God created man exactly how Bible describes it."

Another 31% says that man did evolve, but "God guided." Only 12% back evolution and say "God had no part."

...

Breaking down the numbers, Gallup finds that Republican backing for what it calls "God created human beings in present form" stands at 57% with Democrats at 44%.

Support for this Bible view rises steadily with age: from 43% for those 18 to 29, to 59% for those 65 and older. It declines steadily with education, dropping from 58% for those with high school degrees to a still-substantial 25% with postgraduate degrees.

[Report Author and Director of The Gallup Poll, Frank] Newport wraps it up: "Several characteristics correlate with belief in the biblical explanation for the origin of humans. Those with lower levels of education, those who attend church regularly, those who are 65 and older, and those who identify with the Republican Party are more likely to believe that God created humans 'as is,' than are those who do not share these characteristics."

....

It's not the belief part that stills me, it's that their favored govt officials have JDAMS and the NSA. And at the end of the day, many are, essentially, Christian Socialists. Of course, they'd reject the label. Many violently so. But they'd keep on redistributing wealth with "character building" tax incentives while narrowing the limits of privacy and expanding government intrusion based on their sliderule of what's "necessary for the good." Government grows prodigiously under this current ideology posing as conservatism. States rights took a hit from them, just yesterday, in the form of legislation giving the FDA food labelling primacy, neutering individual states' powers to do so. Trade Association-authored, it's yet another example of Tigers designing their own cages.

An org chart of what this group has created in just 5 years is a communist central planners wet dream. The scary part is, they are just as efficient at disappearing uncomfortable facts and those who bring them out. And inexplicably able to portray themselves as merit-based, intellectually honest, militarily competent and, yes, patriotic.

This is faith based government at it's purest. In that, I guess the poll tells us something. This is truly representative government. God help us.

For sometime now, I have rejected the fictional character known as God to be anything other than part of a story with metaphorical values. Mostly values of some ancient civilizations that agreed stoning was the best way to prosecute someone of alternative cloth wearing fashions.

The idea of God, for the most part creates men of inability, such as inability to apply themselves (just pray God will help) as oppose to break it down find a way. Another words they lack the ability to reason and logic. If anyone wants to view an actual time when men could not use rational thought to find their way out of a paper bag, then look no further than the Dark Ages. It would take a renaissance era and Arabian people rediscovering ancient Greek Algebra to help get us back on track. That would be the track of thinking and questioning. This is why I am almost positive that curiosity did not kill the cat, but rather the priest did.

What if people would not have ventured out against the conventional school of thought, we would be studying the Aristotelian principles on the universe, which a good amount were wrong. I am sure the world would still be flat and we would sail off the end and then begin floating about the center of the solar system as the sun spins around us. Maybe I am being a bit sarcastic.

Most people find that all they have to do is have “faith” this is the ticket out of any conversation that ask for a proof of their God. Though what else does this subscription in God (god of most organized western religions) create, well it creates a society bound by fear, easily follows(as well as gives power to the “communicators” with “God”), lacks thought and does not accept responsibility. All of these ideas are exemplified by the current administration, which happen to be “Christian Conservative”. “Christian conservatives” reject Evolution because it shakes their belief system. It makes people question, then if they do not receive an answer they may leave in search of it. Since church operates like a business, less people equals less profits(sorry donations). That damn pesky money, no matter if you are tax exempt you still need more of it.

As “Christian conservatives” begin to push for the Bible in school as an alternative to Evolution, they also begin to impede on the foundation of separation of church and state. This boundary that was devised has already found encroachment from the dismantling of abortion rights and from administrations that attack foreign peoples because “God” told them so. I wish God would tell me to sleep with all the hot chicks at the gym, then I would know it would be okay. Not to mention I would have an excuse to tell my girlfriend that surely she could not reject.

Perhaps George Carlin said it best when he said,

“I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.”

Isn't this an interesting poll... from the glas is half-empty department.

How about a different spin on this: "Nearly 1/2 of all Americans reject bible, back evolution."

What I find most interesting, from a political perspective, is that we have a guy in charge who claimed to be a "uniter, not a divider". I don't think I ever recall a time in my nearly 40 years where there has been this much division amongst the electorate; Abortion. War. The Economy. Civil Rights. Eh, I'm going off topic here, my apologies.

Great post, as usual.
