Are you Right or Left Brain dominant? A Test
Quick, which direction is she twirling? If you say clockwise, you may be Right- brain dominant. Counter- clockwise means Left- brain preference.
I'm not sure this is exactly super scientific but one thing is fascinating. I saw clockwise first. (No surprise for those who know me.) But, then my eye scanned elsewhere on the page, and when I returned my eyes directly to her she'd flipped directions - I was perceiving counter-clockwise.
I was actually kinda freaked. I looked at her some more trying to "see" clockwise turning. Nothing, still anti-clockwise.
Then I started reading the list of attributes below and halfway down one stack of words there was perceptible shift in the corner of my eye. Damn! She'd reverted back to clockwise as I was assimilating the bullet points. Below is the list of attributes. Try it and see how it works for you.
| LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses logic detail oriented facts rule words and language present and past math and science can comprehend knowing acknowledges order/pattern perception knows object name reality based forms strategies practical safe | RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses feeling "big picture" oriented imagination rules symbols and images present and future philosophy & religion can "get it" (i.e. meaning) believes appreciates spatial perception knows object function fantasy based presents possibilities impetuous risk taking |
In a way, she really is a like a tachometer for our brains. As I was perceiving her in right-brain mode (home to instantaneous image perception and other sensory gestalt), perhaps my left hemisphere, home to theories and chunks of knowledge (words, words, words!) began to kick in to attempt an answer to "what's going on here?" That flip of focus seems to carry with it a different set of "eyes." What's it mean? I'll save what I think for the book (OK, for a taste click on Brain, Metaphor Archetype, Brand at right). But here's something: Beware Power Pointers and Bullet Listers: Halfway through the list of bullets is where I, at least, flipped onto Right-Brain again without consciously deciding to do so.
Maybe my sensation-seeking brain took over and wanted not lists or packeted discipline, but instead, all-at-once imagery--"big picture" or, perhaps, just the stimulation and simplicity of plain old pictures, moving or not. In other words, in order to keep my attention on that list of points, after about 3 seconds the words would have needed to start doing something with each other or doing something to the cones and rods collecting light in my eyeballs. Your mileage may vary. Whadaya think?

UPDATE: I've gone ahead and broken the GIF down into frames (34) here. Nope, it's not a cheap reverse-direction thing. Click the link for some thoughts on how our brains' might infer different directions for her.
and we see some possible reason
UPDATED UPDATE: We've had many many many hits since hitting send on this "throwaway post" so I thought I should correct some--but by no means all of--the sloppy inferences and grammar in the above text.
In addition, one thing I overlooked (ha!) is that there seem to be parallels to the practical experience of presenters and Powerpointâ„¢ cowboys: Don't say what you are showing on screen; mix your images to stimulate attention in your audience. People bore when both hemispheres are experiencing comparable concepts ("Seen it, done it, got the free t-shirt.") So. don't "say [read] what they're seeing" but, instead, find imagery that challenges your audiences' assumptions. Why "challenge" them? Important point. Assumption, or bias, a harsher word than Assumption, is latent in everyone. And, people's bias is your persuasion target, not the people themselves. If you attempt to persuade, you will lose. But, if you engage their mental library of metaphors and images in service of your (seemingly) counter-argument, then you will have them working to make your "adjustment" cohere with their already established belief. Think about it.

Very nice! I couldn't make her turn counterclockwise at all. Seeing the change would be pretty freaky.
I can see it both ways if I look at it long enough. Now I could be wrong, but I think this image is changing direction. I focus in on one part of the image and pay attention to the shape and motion instead of the whole picture. Eventually the motion I am used to seeing in that part of the picture is different. My explanation for this is that the image is built to allow for a change in direction that is so quick, the human eye is unable to perceive the switch. The eye is seeing constant motion, so the minor detail of the shapes changing ever so slightly in an instant is undetectable.
Heya Mike!
Was kinda freaky, so much so I fired up gifbuilder to parse the frames of it, like you ask Kamem: 28 or so frames to the gif and *no* direction change. One frame where her legs pass over each other does create a split second of visual confusion - sort of a like the vibration you get from red letters on green background. At that moment your mind makes a choice, and the succeding frames feed that persistence of vision. Or somethiing like tha
Wow. Very cool. Kinda freaky. She changed directions on my four times during my reading of you post. Thanks for sharing.
I looked at it together with my friend. I saw the image turning counter-clockwise while my friend saw the image turning clockwise and we were watching it at the same time! So I don't think that the image sneaky turns the other way round..
To provoke a shift in direction (mostly from clockwise to counterclockwise), it may help to focus only at the foot on which she is standing. If you zoom in on that foot, it's movement looks more like a windshield wiper, going from left to right and right to left, no circular movement.
At some point, the whole image will shift and start to turn in the 'other' direction. I hope this will help you to see the 'freaky' shift.
In my personal opinion, I doubt the 'perception shift' is related to brain-dominance or thinking style preferences. But it is certainly a fascinating visual illusion!
Please let me know if my suggestion for seeing the shift is helpful to you. Write to: Patricksmile61@hotmail.com
Hey Guys -
How can you possibly see her as reversing, since HER RIGHT SHOULDER, HEAD and HAIR ARE LEADING!??
Even if it were an actual photo/clip of a real dancer, the lowest portion of her body that could effectively lead (if she were to repetitiously twirl), would be her centre of gravity: her bum or her torso.
On the other hand, I was amused to see your "left-brained" approach to solving this through methodic analysis of breaking it down unto its parts. Conversely, I'm far more "right-brained", so I immediately took the most Gestalt, spatial way of looking at it. Perhaps those for whom it switched are more of an intergrated hemespheric dominance, depending on the task of brain's strategy to see and understand the figure.
Interesting Blog. Thanks!
P.S. Well, after watching the dissected image on YouTube,I can now understand how you were seeing the mirage of it "flipping". However, I would not have naturally seen it with your suggestions directing my point of view.
Best wishes,
Sojourner
I am able to switch from left to right brain and back at will using your test. I have developed a way of doing this with my eyes. I initially found a way to do this on Apr. 3rd of this year and have sense transferred this to everyday life. I stay in left brain through most of the work day and spend most of the evening with my wife and children in right brain. I'm a natural right brainer, but one blow to the eye during a basketball practice back in 1988 has given me this gift to switch to left brain to be more productive and happy during the work day. It has been a long, hard road but this Dominant Eye Switch Method pat.pending has also rid me of my alcohol, cigarette, and overeating addictions. I do have some ideas as to where this can lead, but would appreciate any feedback anyone might have.
Thank You,
Rabe
I initially saw clockwise, but as I watched and and my analytical processes took over, she switched direction. In an effort to see if I could reverse it again, I imagined being her and possesing her figure and grace. She switched directions back to clockwise, and I have been unable to switch back again.
I wonder how many who see her going clockwise
are left-handed and/or female. am keenly interested, as I am transgender (male to female), and left handed. A Q&A test I took online says I am right-brain dominant by a 2 to 1 ratio.
At first i saw it counter clockwise but i had this really uneasy feeling in my stomach, then it switched to clockwise which felt more comfortable. Within a few minutes i noticed that if you concentrate on her posed foot you can determine the way she turns. It always feels "wrong" however whenever it is counterclockwise, which i would put down to the "gut feeling".
Thanks for writing this.
She is definately switching directions at some point. If you look close enough, you'll notice her right leg lifted at one point and after a few turns her left leg will come up and she'll go in the opposite direction. Must pay very close attention.
so in real live is it important to have left dominant or right dominant to make certain judgement? maybe we should start from right think and then apply it to the left brain to make certain judgement.maybe the people who can see it with both side make better judgement regarding humanity, inspite the one who see anticlockwise alone which means more like robot with pentium processor?
wow, i saw her movin clockwise but then it chaneg to anticlockwise and stayed that. i think its changing direction too. i dnt no wat that means but all well

Heheheheh... I got an email with this as part of many other optical illusions and such.
It is indeed very possible to see her going both ways and I finally figured out how. I'm able to now change her direction at will.
I will reveal that there is a good trick to it and once you've mastered that trick then changing her turning is easy. It took me a few tries, but it's possible.
Wow, I had to work REALLY hard to get to see it spinning counter-clockwise. I basically had to look down at my keyboard and only let myself be aware of the image onscreen with about 10% of my consciousness. I found my eyes twitching with the effort. Once I had it, I couldn't look back up fully at the screen without her switching back.
